In 1984 the FIA introduced a new motor racing category 2, within which the group B championship would include long distance road rallies. Ultimately real Grand Touring sports cars were once again required. Ferrari reacted in the same year with the prototype GTO.
As usual Pininfarina was responsible for the design. He succeeded in creating a vehicle with a harmonious overall appearance and a streamlined but timeless shape. The GTO that weighed in at 1160 kg had a 2.9 litre v8 mid-engine with four overhead camshafts and four valves per combustion champer. The Ferrari had a capacity of 400 bhp at 7000 rpm and reached a top speed of more than 300 km/h.
